(Consumer Representative to the Council)

 

The Scottish Civil Justice Council is seeking a consumer representative member to join the Council.

The Scottish Civil Justice Council (SCJC) was established in May 2013.  In addition to preparing rules for the Scottish civil courts, it has a remit to provide advice and make recommendations to the Lord President and Scottish Ministers on the development of the Scottish civil justice system.

The SCJC’s Strategic Plan 2026-2029 sets out the Council’s vision and objectives for the coming years. The latest Annual Report 2025/26 and Annual Programme 2026/27 sets out the SCJC’s current priorities and ongoing programme of work.

When appointed, a member will hold office for a period of three years and should be willing to commit approximately 6 days a year to Council business.

Candidates should have suitable experience to enable them to:

  • contribute to the development and approval of Rules for the Court of Session and sheriff court civil proceedings ensuring sufficient levels of scrutiny and challenge is being applied;
  • advise and make recommendations to the Lord President on the development of the civil justice system; and
  • agree the SCJC annual report and programme of work.

    Successful candidates will meet one or more of the criteria:

  • experience and knowledge of consumer affairs,
  • knowledge of the non-commercial legal advice sector, and
  • an awareness of the interests of litigants in the civil courts
